Customer Review: Surprisingly good product (for the price bracket, mind)

After doing plenty of price comparison and feature research, I decided to purchase the Sigma 50-200mm DC lens. A bit of background is in order: I am a photography student on a rather stringent budget who was looking for a suitable quality telephoto lens for simple portrait work. As it stands, the lens delivers on what it says on the package, with the caveat that they are not as high in quality as on the equivalent first party lens. Here's the scoop:
Overall build of the lens is a surprisingly heavy feeling hardened rubber and plastic, with a metal mounting ring for the Canon EOS cameras. From how it's decided to handle so far, the lens is not in danger of breaking any time soon, though I'd have to own the thing for a couple of more months before making any qualifications about the sturdiness. The lens also shoots very well, with a much greater focal length than the kit lens that comes with the Canon XSi (my current camera). The only downsides here are that the focal length ring is really resistant to being moved, rendering it slightly more difficult to rapidly fine tune your focal length, and that the lens makes quite a bit of noise when using some of the automatic focus.
Speaking of which, let's cover the mechanical bits. Sigma saw fit to give this lens a really nice focus ring on the front end,and it moves silky smooth. The problem lies in the autofocus: in some respects, a great attempt at replicating Canon's AF system, but the noise is noticeable to the photographer while using it. This actually is more of a nitpick than anything else, as it's not significantly loud that it would disturb your ability to take a shot, but the HSM advertised on the box isn't all that quiet compared to the nearly imperceptible Canon 18-55mm kit lens. The Optical Stabilizer in this model also takes a little longer than the more proactive/passive Image Stabilizer by Canon, since it requires a halfpress of the shutter trigger to activate and a wait time of about 0.5-1 second to get going. In comparison, the Canon IS is almost always trying to stabilize your shots, and usually hits the stable zone in a fraction of a second.
Final verdict? Wonderful lens for the price and for whom it's intended. While not entirely up to snuff compared to some other lens, it is a nice third-party alternative that should handle fairly well. While I have heard issues of chromatic aberration at certain aperture values, it's not enough to make me stay away from this lens, just wonder how the professional grade Sigma lenses must handle in comparison to their Canon equivalents.

This compact high-performance telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma?s own Optical Stabilizer function. The lens incorporates SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in the front lens groups and is equipped with an inner focusing system to provide high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focus. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function effectively eliminates the effects of camera shake so subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the viewfinder as well as in the image. It allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography. For Sony and Pentax mounts the built-in OS System allows the photographer to see the stabilized image in the viewfinder and can be used as an alternative with cameras having built-in image stabilization. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.
