Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sigma EF-530 DG Super Electronic Flash for Sony DSLRCustomer Review: Maybe a Slave Flash? Summary: 2 Stars
I had high hopes for this flash considering it's a Sigma and I'm very pleased with the quality of their lenses. I was a little hisitant because of how new Sony Alphas are and skeptical of whether or not one of the first non-Sony flashes would work well on the Alphas. Well, sadly I should've listened to my skepticism.
There are not nearly enough options on the flash to really use it for professional situations. It's better than the low-end Sony flash, but not good enough to use in the field. I've given it the benefit of the doubt and have tried it with three weddings this June only to be left dissapointed and not confident in its reliability.
There are issues with the mechanics of it. One example is that there are occasions when it has great difficulty auto-zooming and cycles back and forth, 17-85, 17-85, over and over while never coming to rest. It's as if the range senor can't detect the subject distance and gets caught in a loop. Even removing the batteries doesn't seem to solve the problem. I've found that if I focus around the field on different subjects the cycle can be broken and I can get back to shooting, but in the high paced environment of a wedding, that just isn't an option.
And, often times the flash simply refuses to fire until I pull the batteries and put them back in. In addition I use both an Sony Alpha A100K and a Sony Alpha DSLRA350K which work well with Sony brand lenses and accessories, but this flash doesn't seem to fire at all on the A100 and unreliably on the A350 at best.
Over all perhaps this could be used for a slave flash, but I certainly wouldn't think of using it for a primary flash. Go ahead and spend the extra money and get the quality flash you need. Don't rely on this one unless you're a hobbiest and could get away with something less reliable.
